Vegas Pro 20 Launched

Vegas Pro is a great alternative to the likes of Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve. I’ve mentioned it a few times on my show because it offers quite a few tools aimed at making video editing a much simpler task for consumers and prosumers. Today Vegas Pro 20 has launched.

Adobe Premiere Pro June 2022 Updates Released

Each summer, Adobe pushes out features for its video editing software aimed at making the creative workflow more efficient. Whether it’s leaning on AI with Adobe Sensei, adding new features or just simply adjusting the user interface. Today’s the day for the latest on the Adobe Premiere Pro* updates.

Vertical Workspace

Video creation is great, but apparently, video creation for social media is even better. With platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok pushing the video viewing behavior from the traditional “landscape” 16:9 aspect viewing to “portrait” 9:16 aspect viewing, it’s been critical that content creators embrace not only shooting for vertical viewing, but also editing for it. Adobe has added a dedicated Vertical workspace for this purpose. It has also updated the Essentials workspace to really help editors that are on a single screen or laptop.

Proxy Workflow

Working with proxy files in video editing is nothing new, but Adobe has opt to make it more obvious to the editor that proxy files are being utilized in the project timeline. This is done by adding badges to the clips in the timeline that are proxies, as well as adding badges to the file in the project bin.

New Text Tools

The update also includes the ability to add nice looking shadows and gradients to text you create as graphics in your video. The interface is still the same, there’s just another field added.

Other updates include improved performance for M1 Apple computers as well as additional GPU-Accelerated effects. More info on the update can be found on the Adobe blog post here.

I'm Using Davinci Resolve a Little More These Days

I’ve been using Davinci Resolve a little more these days because I wanted to get better in yet another app that’s being used regularly in the creative industry. This has been a several month process and I’m still learning as I go. With that said, I did feel comfortable enough to do an intro video for folks on my Twitter page asking if I can help with a tutorial for beginners. Well, here’s that tutorial. This is just to help you get started with Davinci Resolve. And for the record, I’m not ready to leave the Adobe Creative Cloud* just yet, but Resolve can definitely make one think about it. At this time, I still find value in having Lightroom, Photoshop, and After Effects for my workflow. Thanks for watching and sharing. Click the image below to watch.

Blackmagic Design Creates Free Tutorials for DaVinci Resolve

I’ve been attempting to get more serious with my workflow in DaVinci Resolve. So much that I’ve even purchased a training course in addition to watching many video tutorials online and doing my own trial and error. Fortunately, the team at Blackmagic Design have stepped up to create its very own set of tutorials. THANK YOU, team.

I started checking out the tutorials and they’re quite nice. DaVinci Resolve is such a robust app with so many different tools, I expected the tutorial playlist to be several hours long. (It’s roughly three hours.) Blackmagic Design has done a great job breaking down the subject matter to make it easier to digest all the information. Check out the tutorial playlist here via YouTube or just click on the image above.

I’m going to create my own Resolve tutorials as some point for my show, but I’m not ready for that just yet. I do ok in the app with some of the content I’ve created recently, but I don’t feel I’m ready to “teach” about the app. I know many of you have asked about me doing tutorials. I promise. I’ll create some quick hitters soon. Having a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera* in my kit has been great and working with the RAW footage in Resolve is a dream experience. In the meantime, make sure you’re subscribed to my YouTube channel and my podcast at TWiT for more updates.

Free Motion Graphics Templates For Ya

I recently put together some generic motion graphics templates for anyone wanting to apply them to their videos. These templates are just a few lower thirds based on social media, a transition template and also an intro/outro template. You can only use these in Premiere Pro. The templates allow you to customize the text you display with them as well as change colors on some of the elements. Download the templates from here. Save them to your computer or your Creative Cloud library.

I'm also starting a tutorial series for beginners to learn how to use After Effects. First off, let me say that I'm not the best After Effects user out there, but I do know enough to create usable animations and motion graphics. The tutorial series will be on my YouTube channel as a playlist. Here's the first installment below. This first installment is a little long, but that's on purpose. I don't intend for the subsequent chapters to be this long. Hopefully this will work well for beginners. Thanks for checking it out and SHARING it with others!
