First it was the Canon announcement with its release of the R5 and R6 camera bodies. Now we have Nikon announcing its latest mirrorless camera offering. The Z5.
Entry Point To Full-Frame Mirrorless
Nikon isn’t new to the mirrorless game as it already has the Z6 available* to you. A camera body that felt fairly nice in my hands even though it was smaller than I’d like. This current announcement comes in at a slightly lower price point for the Z5*. I found this fascinating as the pricing isn’t terribly different (a few hundred dollars difference), but then again, times are a little tough for consumers these days.
Tech Specs
This younger sibling to the Z6 has a 24.3MP sensor that’s full-frame
4K video resolution at 30 frames per second (1.7 cropped view)
1080p video resolution at 60 frames per second (full-frame view)
In-body image stabilization (5 axis, up to 5 stops)
Two SD UHS-II card slots
4 frames per second high-speed capture
Log video recording for better color grading
Human and animal eye autofocus capability
Touchscreen LCD
WiFi connection
Z-mount for lens
Mini HDMI port
USB port
USB-C port for portable powering capability
In addition to the camera announcement, Nikon also stated it will update and release beta firmware for users wanting to use the Z5 as a webcam for all of the Zoom and Skype meetings we’re having today. This will be released later in August 2020.
Kudos to Nikon for putting another offering out there for consumers interesting in looking at full-frame mirrorless. This body reminds me of the Canon EOS RP launch in 2019. So many people disliked that camera at launch. To Nikon’s credit, the tech specs at launch seem better than the EOS RP, even though both are considered entry-level full-frame camera bodies.
You can get the Nikon Z5 starting at $1399* over at Adorama for pre-order. There’s also a 24-50mm f/4 lens* available to pre-order worth noting. The z-mount is Nikon’s mirrorless lens mount. Converters are available if needed. Speaking of Adorama, they did a nice video chatting with the reps of Nikon to discuss the new camera in more detail. Check it out below.
