Just about a month ago, Canon announced the EOS Webcam utility to help assist with the huge “work from home” movement. The idea was to allow users to have a quality webcam to be used on video chats instead of the crapptastic webcams most laptops have on them today. The utility is a beta, but still works fairly well. The only other catch was the software was only available on Windows.
“We heard you, Mac fans! Our EOS Webcam Utility Beta software is now available on both Mac and Windows operating systems. Upgrade your video conferencing by turning your compatible Canon camera into your main webcam using a USB cable. Watch as Canon Senior Pro Market Specialist, Genaro, takes you through the steps to install and set up your camera on your Mac operating system, as well as enable the software to be used within your favorite video conferencing app. “ -Canon
Now the utility is available for MacOS. This is a good thing considering how bad Macbook laptop cameras are. I mean, iPhones have some amazing cameras on them, yet the illustrious Macbooks have hideous cameras. You can download the beta here via Canon. Please note that select Canon cameras are compatible with this tool. Granted there’s quite a few compatible ones, but don’t be surprised if your ten-year-old Rebel DSLR isn’t supported.
