Just about everyday there’s a rumor around what the team at Canon is working on for photographers. This fodder can be fun, exciting or even frustrating because rumors are. . .well. . .RUMORS. Well at this time I have some facts. Canon has launched a couple new photography-related products. One is an updated DSLR, one is a lens and the other is a bit of a surprise considering today’s consumer photography needs and workflow.
The Camera
The next iteration of the Canon EOS “Rebel” line is the new T8i. This is the hobbyist and enthusiasts DSLR. It’s for the folks that don’t want to use their phones as a camera and also those that would like the option to utilize different lenses. This comes with an APS-C (crop) sensor and has a much smaller form-factor than that of the pro-grade DSLRs. With an 18-55mm kit lens, you can get this package for $899. Specs of interests includes an ISO speed up to 25,600. It also means updated video capability when you can now shoot 4K 29.97fps or 1080p up to 59.954fps on this 24-megapixel sensor. My favorite feature is the vari-screen. So useful. (Images by Canon)
The New Lens
One of my favorite focal lengths is 24-105mm on a lens. It’s pretty versatile for most shots. Canon now has an RF-mount version designed for its mirrorless lineup, but it’s not the pro-grade “L” series. You can now get an f/4-7.1 , image stabilized STM version of the lens. You will still get the new control ring feature on this lens and nice sharpness at a lower price point. The “L” series may have better glass, but STM quality has proven to be much better than the standard kit lenses that usually come with the Canon bodies. This lens will be available for $399.
Selphy, Not Selfie
Canon has also announced a new portable printer for the consumers wanting to have quick access to print out fun memories (or selfies) from vacation or that fun party they attended. All in the popular square format you see on your social media today. The printer is ultra portable where it can easily fit within a backpack pocket or a purse. Printing is done wirelessly from your smartphone via the Canon Print app. Pricing will be $149 for the printer and $14.99 for a 20-pack of photo paper. (Images by Canon)
I had the pleasure to check out these devices while at CES and I look forward to getting my hands on them now that they’re officially announced. I will say that I wish the T8i was available years ago when I got started with photography. Really looking like a great device to get your feet wet in this creative space. Stay tuned as if I get my hands on review units, I’ll gladly share my experience.
